Empowering and Expanding Communities from Knowledge to Best Practices in Data Mobilization: The TaiBIF Collaborator Training System

What this was about

Melissa Chin-Yi Lu described TaiBIFer, TaiBIF's structured training and certification system that turns workshop participants into paid collaborators to extend the capacity of a small GBIF node team. Participants take a core workshop, complete scored assignments (Darwin Core mapping, sampling-event structuring, test IPT publishing, OpenRefine cleaning, GBIF searching) and a role-specific practical assessment for one of four roles: translator, ambassador, data mobilizer or species name checker. Since late 2022 62 collaborators have been certified; challenges are case management, retention and continuous funding, which TaiBIF supplements with AI and toolkit tools.

Why it matters. Many GBIF nodes face demand beyond their staff capacity; TaiBIFer offers a concrete, replicable model for building a certified, paid community of practice and a career pathway in biodiversity informatics.

• Demand for publishing support, data cleaning, translation and taxonomic validation outgrew TaiBIF's small team.
• TaiBIFer, inspired by the GBIF volunteer community model, creates a path from learning to practice: workshop, scored assignments, advanced certificate, role-specific assessment, then eligibility for paid collaboration.
• Four roles: translators (localising GBIF resources into Traditional Chinese), ambassadors (workshop mentors, potential trainers), data mobilizers (helping institutions clean and publish datasets), and species name checkers (contributing to TaiCOL).
• Separating roles lets people contribute through their strongest skills and lets TaiBIF set role-relevant criteria.
• Since late 2022: 11 translators, 21 ambassadors, 11 data mobilizers and 19 name checkers (62 in total); data mobilizer attracts the most applicants but has the hardest qualification bar.
• Paid assignments recognise that the services require time, responsibility and expertise, and create a feedback loop into future training.
• Human capacity is complemented by 'Digital TaiBIFer', a 24/7 AI helper, and the TaiBIF Open Data Toolkit for dataset templating, validation and cleaning.
